Authentication
Assay and Authentication
Authentication is the process of confirming that a coin, bar, or round is genuine and contains the expected metal content. No single casual test is perfect, especially for high-value gold.
Specifications matter
Weight, diameter, thickness, edge detail, and design features should be checked against known specifications. A mismatch does not always prove fraud, but it requires caution.
Assay is stronger than appearance
Gold-plated counterfeits and altered pieces can look convincing. Electronic testing, XRF, ultrasound, or professional assay can provide stronger evidence than visual inspection.
Packaging is helpful but not final
Sealed assay packaging can support confidence for bars, but packaging can also be imitated. Trusted sources and careful verification remain important.
Authentication guidance is educational. For valuable items, use a qualified dealer, grading service, or professional testing method.
